In an earlier post, we discussed the best wines from golfers. It seemed that the gentlemanly sport and drinking wine go hand in hand. On that note, there are other celebrities that decided to get into the wine business and own their very own vineyards. As these celebrities excelled in the fields of acting, directing sport and music -- can they parlay that success in the winemaking business.
The great Italian-American film director, Francis Ford Coppola was the first prominent celebrity in the winemaking business. The director of the Godfather Trilogy and many other successful films began by inadvertently purchasing land set for vineyards. After much success with his first vintage in 1977, Coppola went on to open his own brand name winery in Sonoma County, CA. The Coppola wine today is a standard for its many blends of grape.
Now for other prominent celebrity wines: The ultimate “A-List” couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, came out with their own Provencal wine. Chateau Miraval Côtes de Provence Rosé 2012. It is considered a high quality wine using the region’s best grapes for the rosé. Though more expensive in price compared to other rosés, it still packs a lot of flavor worthy of the “A-List” couple.
Gordon Sumner, otherwise known as “Sting” was frontman for the successful British trio, The Police. He went on to an even more successful career as a solo singer and as an actor. But he also made a splash as a winemaker. Sting’s wine comes from Tuscan region of Italy. Il Palagio Toscana Casino Delle Vie 2009 is a vintage red that contains unusual accents of cedar, sandalwood along with cherry, currant and oddly tobacco. Altogether it brings together a spicy, strong wine that has natural, smoky flavors.
In an earlier post, we mentioned golfers and wine. Multiple major champion, Ernie Els brings his Signature Stellenbosch 2008. If you’re not golf fan, you should know Ernie Els is known as the “Big Easy” because of his large frame and his extremely smooth, silky swing. His South African Stellenbosch is also smooth and silky, rich with flavors of blackcurrant and plum. Given the natural ingredients, it will have a darker color and texture compared to most Cabernet Sauvignons. Overall, the smoky wine is consider one of the most refined, suave wines around.
It seems that celebrities do know what they are doing when it comes to wine. We not sure if they’re stomping grapes or filling large barrels but they are attaching their names to wines. And what fine wines they bring. And their wines somewhat resemble their personalities.
